Red Herrings

A red herring is a diversion or a lie used to manipulate the audience from the original plan. Red herrings are often seen in films, games, and puzzles.
In films, a red herring can often be found in Alfred Hitchcock films like Psycho, where characters turn out to be anything but what the viewer expects them to be. It controls the views assumptions and can literally make them believes the plot is about something when it isn't.
